The Begining
In July 2009 Fanm Veret, Wi Nou Kapab! "The Women of Verrettes, Yes we can do it!", became a legal co-operative, with goals of economic and social independence. The women of Verrettes have worked hard to become a self sustainable group of artisans, by creating McSocks and Krik Krak Creole Dolls with limited resources at hand. The McSocks -hand felted sleeves for MacBooks and iPhones- are made from 100% organic wool, imported to Haiti from the certified organic sheep farm Thirteen Mile Lamb and Wool Company in Montana, U.S.
The project was initiated and financed by Turtle Tree foundation, a non-profit organization registered in the Netherlands. The Dutch foundation assisted the women's group Fanm Veret by organizing workshops with American artisans who taught the women about the art of felting. The McSock sleeves were developed with the help of artisan Ashley Helvey from San Francisco, Mary Jane Marcasiano, Fashion Designer in New York and Ton Vriens, a Dutch journalist based in New York. Fanm Veret received a grant from the government of Sevilla, Spain, to follow a number of courses to become a co-operative. The contact with the Spanish donor was established by Friends of Haiti in NY Corp., a charity incorporated in the state of New York who also acts as the receiver and paymaster of the proceeds of the sales of McSocks and Krik Krak Creaole Dolls.
McSocks are a product of durability, uniqueness, and handmade care. Fanm Veret have created a cover for your Macbooks and Iphones that provides protection and style. The women of Verrettes have high hopes that this product will establish them as artisans, who are able to sell their wares to sophisticated American buyers. They need to sell 1500 of these coveres before the end of the year in order to become a sustainable enterprise.
The effort and determination that these women are demonstrating is reflected in their constant striving to make a perfect product.Fanm Veret is not asking for charity- they are a co-operative producing high quality products. A team of interns and volenteers is assisting under the umbrella of the Turtle Tree foundation, assisting Famn Veret in marketing their products.
